The brothers I met hiking in Zion National Park asked if I wanted to see something amazing. I agreed even though it was curious a 12 and a 10-year-old were so far out here.
We hiked miles away from cell service into a valley with bizarre, cylindrical canyon formations. "We're here," said the older brother, Chad. "Now be quiet."
I waited as the ground rumbled beneath me, then I saw the snake slither out of my nightmares and through the canyon. Its huge body, hundreds of feet long, filled the canyon and reformed the land like God.
Transfixed in fear and awe, I didn't notice Lance turn to me.
"Thanks for coming," he said with an innocent smile. "Dillinger was getting hungry. "
I saw my shadow disappear within another and my world turns dark, slimy, and smooth.
2 hours into my agonizing digestion, I still can't help but think I really did see something amazing.
